Choose your setting
France by setting
Few countries have as deep a tradition of small, characterful hotels as France. The family-run auberge, the countryside château and the Parisian hôtel particulier were all here long before the word boutique, and many now pair centuries-old walls with contemporary design and some of the best cooking in Europe.
Paris and the cities
Paris leads our ranking, with small hotels in nearly every quarter, from the Marais and Saint-Germain to Montmartre. Lyon, the country's culinary capital, and Bordeaux, on the edge of its great vineyards, are both handsome, walkable cities. Avignon and Colmar have compact historic centers ideal for a weekend.
The south
Provence and the Côte d'Azur are classic territory for boutique stays: stone mas among lavender and vines in the Luberon, art-filled inns in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, and seaside villas in Nice and Saint-Tropez. Corsica's Bonifacio, perched on white cliffs, feels wilder.
Wine country
Champagne, Burgundy, Bordeaux and the Loire Valley all have estate hotels and grand houses where tastings, cellar visits and long dinners set the pace. The Loire adds Renaissance châteaux to the mix.
Mountains and Atlantic
Chamonix and Megève are the Alps at their most stylish, Annecy sits on one of Europe's clearest lakes, and the Dordogne around Sarlat is a land of castles and cliff-side villages. On the Atlantic, Biarritz is the surf town of the Basque coast, while Île de Ré and Honfleur are the gentle seaside of the west and north.
When to go
Late spring and September are ideal across most of the country. August is the French holiday month, when the coast is crowded and some city restaurants close. The Alps are best from December to April and again in July and August.
