Choose your setting
United Kingdom by setting
The United Kingdom has an unusually rich tradition of small, characterful hotels. Georgian townhouses, converted coaching inns, Victorian mansions and Highland shooting lodges now hold some of Europe's most distinctive places to stay, and most have fewer than forty rooms. Many are run by owners who also care about the kitchen, so dinner is often as much a reason to book as the bedroom.
The cities
London leads the ranking, with boutique hotels in Clerkenwell, Soho, Covent Garden and Mayfair that occupy former townhouses and private clubs. Edinburgh pairs a medieval Old Town with a Georgian New Town and a handful of baronial and Victorian hotels. Bath, York, Oxford and Cambridge are walkable historic centers where old buildings have been reworked into small, design-led hotels.
Countryside and coast
The Cotswolds are the classic setting for honey-stone inns and manor houses, while the Lake District, the Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland offer fell-top views and country-house dining. On the coast, St Ives, Salcombe, Pembrokeshire and the north Norfolk shore have beach hotels and harbor-side inns, and the Isle of Skye and the Scottish Highlands add lochs, glens and remote lodges.
When to go
Late spring through early autumn is the most reliable season for walking and coastal stays, though the countryside is lovely in autumn. City hotels are busiest in summer and around the Christmas markets; Highland and island properties often close from November to March.
