Choose your setting
Egypt by setting
Egypt is known for its monuments, but the places that make a stay memorable are often modest in scale: a Nile-front house in Luxor, a mud-brick lodge in the Western Desert, a Bedouin-run beach camp on the Sinai coast. Boutique hotels here tend to be small, personal and rooted in local building traditions, and they offer a calmer base than the capital's traffic.
Cairo and the pyramids
Cairo is huge and loud, and the best way to enjoy it is from a quiet hotel in a leafy neighborhood such as Zamalek, Garden City or Islamic Cairo. Giza's pyramids are a short ride away, and the Grand Egyptian Museum has changed how many travelers structure their days in the area.
The Nile
Luxor's temples and the Valley of the Kings, Aswan's islands and Nubian villages and the great temples of Abu Simbel make up the heart of the Upper Nile. Many of the nicest places to stay are on the west bank or on islands, away from the main corniche, with terraces facing the river.
Oases and desert
Siwa, Bahariya, Dakhla and Fayoum are reached by long drives from Cairo. Their eco-lodges use mud brick, solar power and local food, and several are among the most distinctive places to stay in the country.
The coasts
The Red Sea resorts of El Gouna, Soma Bay and Marsa Alam are known for diving and kitesurfing, while Dahab and Nuweiba on the Sinai coast are quieter, more bohemian options. Alexandria on the Mediterranean offers faded grand hotels and a different, cooler atmosphere.
When to go
October to April is the best time for most of the country. Upper Egypt can be extremely hot from May to September, while the Red Sea stays swimmable almost year-round.
