Luberon (Provence)
From €265/ night
An 18th-century estate near Lauris with a Michelin-starred restaurant, a winery and a long pool among the vines.
The Luberon is a range of hills east of Avignon, protected as a regional nature park and dotted with some of France's most beautiful villages: Gordes on its rock, ochre-red Roussillon, Bonnieux and Ménerbes. Between them lie vineyards, cherry orchards, olive groves and, in early summer, lavender. Market days rotate from village to village and are a highlight of any stay.
The best boutique hotels are restored mas and country estates with pools and gardens, often with excellent restaurants. Staying on the edge of a village lets you walk to dinner.
A car is essential. Lavender blooms from late June to mid-July, when the area is busiest. May, June and September are ideal for walking and cycling, and Mont Ventoux is close for keen cyclists.
