Liechtenstein by setting
Liechtenstein is a tiny Alpine principality on the Rhine between Switzerland and Austria, roughly 25 kilometers long. A castle looks down over the capital, vineyards climb the valley sides, and the mountains rise to a small ski resort. It is a country for slow, scenic days rather than sightseeing lists, with excellent museums for its size.
Vaduz and the Rhine valley
Vaduz, the capital, is small and tidy, with the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, a postage stamp museum and a pedestrian center under the prince's castle. Schaan and Balzers, in the valley, are quieter and give easy access to hiking and the fortress of Gutenberg.
The mountains
Triesenberg is a village founded by Walser settlers, with a museum of their traditions and views across the valley. Malbun, at the end of a mountain road, is the principality's family-friendly ski resort and a trailhead for summer hiking.
Hotels
Boutique hotels are scarce. The clear standout is a Relais & Châteaux hotel above Vaduz. Elsewhere you will find family-run mountain hotels and modern design-minded city hotels.
When to go
May to October is the best season for walking and cycling, and the Rhine valley is mild. Winter brings skiing at Malbun. Zurich is about 90 minutes away, and the nearest rail link is at Sargans in Switzerland.
