Chamonix is the birthplace of modern mountaineering and hosted the first Winter Olympics in 1924. Its valley lies beneath Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Western Europe, and the Aiguille du Midi cable car climbs to over 12,000 feet for views across the Alps. In winter it is a serious ski and freeride destination; in summer, hikers and climbers take over.
The town center is lively and convenient for restaurants and the cable cars, while Argentière and Les Praz are quieter villages up the valley.
Chamonix's ski areas are spread along the valley and linked by bus. The Mont Blanc Tunnel makes Courmayeur in Italy an easy day trip. Mountain weather is changeable, so check forecasts before going high.
