Reims (Champagne)
A curving hillside hotel above the vineyards near Épernay, with a large spa and sweeping views.
Reims is where French kings were crowned, in a Gothic cathedral famous for its smiling angel and Chagall windows. Beneath the city, miles of chalk cellars hold the bottles of the great Champagne houses, many of which offer tours and tastings. The surrounding Montagne de Reims and Marne valley are dotted with smaller grower-producers and villages.
Hotels in town put you close to the cathedral and the champagne houses. Estate hotels among the vineyards around Reims and Épernay offer a quieter, more rural experience.
Reims is 45 minutes from Paris by high-speed train, but a car makes exploring the vineyards much easier. The harvest is in September. Booking cellar visits ahead is recommended.
