Île de Ré
A rambling townhouse hotel in Ars-en-Ré with stone walls and romantic, pale interiors.
Île de Ré lies off La Rochelle on France's Atlantic coast, linked by a long bridge. Its villages of white houses with green shutters, its salt pans, oyster beds and sandy beaches have made it a favorite retreat for Parisians who want a low-key, elegant escape. Saint-Martin-de-Ré, with its Vauban fortifications and harbor, is the island's main town, and Ars-en-Ré and La Flotte are equally charming.
Saint-Martin has the best choice of small hotels and restaurants. Villages farther west are quieter, closer to the lighthouse and the wilder beaches.
The island is best explored by bicycle on its extensive network of paths. July and August are busy; spring and September are beautiful and calmer.
