Annecy's old town is a picture of pastel houses, flower-decked bridges and canals flowing out of one of Europe's cleanest lakes. The lake itself is the main attraction: swim, sail or cycle the path along its shores, and ride up the surrounding peaks for views of turquoise water below. The villages of Talloires and Menthon-Saint-Bernard on the eastern shore are quieter retreats.
The old town is lively and walkable, while lakeside hotels around Talloires and Veyrier offer private jetties and gardens on the water.
Annecy is under an hour from Geneva airport. Summer is busy and warm; late spring and September are calmer. The region is known for fine dining, with several Michelin-starred restaurants around the lake.
