Boutique hotels in Tonga

Tonga is the Pacific's last kingdom: humpback whales you can swim with, thatched fales on empty beaches and small island resorts reached by boat.

21 boutique hotels handpicked

Tonga is a kingdom of more than 170 islands, and the only Pacific nation never colonized. Its royal family, its Sunday-quiet villages and its strong Christian faith shape daily life, and tourism remains small. The reward is empty beaches, clear water and a calm pace, with accommodation that is usually family-run and often built of local materials.

Tongatapu

The main island has the capital, Nuku'alofa, a low waterfront town with the Royal Palace, a market and a handful of small, friendly hotels. A short boat ride from the jetty brings you to island resorts in the lagoon, where fales stand under palms on coral islets.

Vava'u

The northern group is the best place for sailing and for swimming with humpback whales between July and October. Neiafu, its harbor town, has waterfront hotels, and the islands around it have small resorts reached by boat, from a five-fale retreat on Kapa to guesthouses on 'Utungake.

Ha'apai and 'Eua

Ha'apai is a low, remote group of coral islands with a few simple beach resorts and whale-swimming operators. 'Eua is a raised limestone island south of Tongatapu with cliffs, caves and forest walking.

When to go

May to October is dry and cooler, and whale season runs from July to October. Cyclones are possible between November and April. Sundays are strictly quiet, with most businesses closed.
