Choose your setting
Honduras by setting
Honduras is a country of short distances and big contrasts: a Maya city of carved stelae in the west, cloud forest and rivers in the north, and the Bay Islands floating on the second-largest barrier reef in the world. Tourism is modest, which means small hotels are often family-run and personal, and you rarely share a ruin or a reef with a crowd.
Maya heritage and colonial towns
Copán Ruinas is the main reason to come, a cobbled town beside one of the most elaborately sculpted Maya sites in the Americas, with courtyard hotels and a few boutique stays on the hills above. Gracias, in the western highlands, is a quieter colonial town with hot springs and cloud-forest trails. Tegucigalpa, the capital, has limited appeal beyond a night on the way through.
Rainforest and lakes
Around La Ceiba, lodges in the Cangrejal valley and at the edge of Pico Bonito National Park offer birdwatching, rafting and waterfall hikes. Lake Yojoa, between the capital and San Pedro Sula, has lakeside lodges and coffee farms.
Caribbean coast and islands
Roatán, Utila and Guanaja are the diving islands, ranging from polished beach hotels to wooden guesthouses over the water. Cayos Cochinos is a protected cluster of cays with almost no accommodation. The north coast towns of Tela and Trujillo have long beaches and a laid-back Garifuna culture.
When to go
February to May is dry and best for the islands and ruins. The north coast is wettest from October to January. Check official travel advice before going, as safety conditions vary by region.
