Beaune lies at the heart of the Côte d'Or, the narrow ridge of vineyards that produces some of the world's most prized Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The town's emblem is the 15th-century Hospices de Beaune with its patterned glazed-tile roof, and its ramparts and streets are full of wine merchants and cellars open for tastings.
The old town is compact and walkable, with small hotels in historic houses. Wine villages such as Meursault, Pommard and Puligny-Montrachet are a short drive or bike ride away.
The Hospices de Beaune wine auction in November is a major event. The Route des Grands Crus, which runs from Dijon to Santenay, is ideal by bicycle.
