Choose your setting
New Zealand by setting
New Zealand's best places to stay are small. Family-run lodges, converted heritage buildings and private retreats are common here, often with ten rooms or fewer, a chef who works with local producers, and a view that explains why the building is there.
The South Island
Queenstown and Wanaka, on glacial lakes below the Southern Alps, are the country's adventure and luxury hubs, with lodges on the water's edge and a growing number of wine-country stays in Central Otago. Farther north, Marlborough is known for Sauvignon Blanc, Nelson and Abel Tasman for golden beaches, and Kaikōura for whales and a rugged coast. Christchurch and Akaroa have a mix of rebuilt city hotels and French-flavored harbor-town guesthouses.
The North Island
Auckland is the arrival point for most visitors, with boutique hotels in Ponsonby and the city center and a short ferry ride to Waiheke Island's vineyards. The Bay of Islands, the Coromandel and Matakana offer coastal lodges, while Rotorua and Taupō are known for geothermal landscapes and lakeside lodges. Hawke's Bay, Martinborough and Wellington round out a North Island of wine, food and a capital with a strong café culture.
When to go
Seasons are reversed from the northern hemisphere. Summer (December to February) is warm and busy on the beaches; autumn (March to May) brings golden colors to Central Otago and the harvest season for wine; winter (June to August) is ski season around Queenstown and Wanaka. The weather is changeable everywhere, so pack layers.
