Loire Valley
An elegant manor by the river in Amboise, with views of the royal château.
The Loire Valley stretches through central France, its river lined with more than three hundred châteaux, from the royal splendor of Chambord and Chenonceau to the gardens of Villandry. The valley is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its vineyards produce Sancerre, Vouvray and Chinon.
Amboise, Tours, Blois and Saumur make good bases, but the most memorable stays are in château hotels and manor houses set in their own parks. Cycling between châteaux on the Loire à Vélo path is a popular way to explore.
The valley is about two hours from Paris by car or an hour by train to Tours. Spring and early autumn are ideal; the most famous châteaux are busy in summer.
