Avignon
An 18th-century mansion behind the Papal Palace, filled with antiques, with a garden and a cooking school in its old kitchen.
Avignon was the seat of the papacy in the 14th century, and the vast Palais des Papes still dominates its skyline. The famous Pont Saint-Bénézet stretches halfway across the Rhône, and the old town within the ramparts is full of plane-shaded squares, galleries and restaurants. Every July, the Festival d'Avignon fills the city with theater.
The old town inside the walls is best, ideally near the palace or the quieter streets around the Rue des Teinturiers.
Avignon is under three hours from Paris by high-speed train and a good base for Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the Pont du Gard and the Luberon. July is crowded and hotels book up months ahead.
