The Unterlinden Museum holds the Isenheim Altarpiece, one of the great works of German Renaissance painting. All around, villages like Riquewihr, Kaysersberg and Eguisheim produce Riesling and Gewürztraminer.
The old town and Petite Venise have small hotels in historic houses, all within walking distance of the sights.
Colmar's Christmas markets in late November and December are among the most famous in Europe and draw large crowds. The town is easily reached by train from Strasbourg and Basel.
