Bonifacio (Corsica)
A small hotel among wild maquis about ten minutes outside Bonifacio, with suites and a calm, natural style.
Bonifacio is one of the most dramatic towns in the Mediterranean, its old houses balanced on the edge of white cliffs above a deep natural harbor. The upper town is a maze of lanes, churches and lookouts, while the marina below is lined with seafood restaurants. Boat trips visit sea caves and the Lavezzi Islands, a marine reserve of granite boulders and clear water.
The citadel has a few small hotels with views over the strait, while the coast around Santa Manza and the beaches to the north hold secluded retreats among the maquis.
Figari airport is about 30 minutes away. Summer is hot and busy; May, June and September are ideal. Nearby beaches such as Rondinara and Palombaggia are among the most beautiful in Corsica.
