Choose your setting
Nicaragua by setting
Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America and one of the least crowded. Its best stays are small: restored colonial houses with courtyard pools, eco-lodges on volcano slopes, and surf hotels tucked above Pacific coves. The pace is unhurried and the welcome is warm, and a night in a well-run boutique hotel costs far less than in neighboring Costa Rica.
Colonial cities
Granada, on the shore of Lake Nicaragua, is the showpiece, with pastel facades, a lakeside promenade and courtyard hotels a short walk from the cathedral. León, the university city, is more bohemian: whitewashed churches, murals and a rooftop view across the volcano chain. Both make easy bases for day trips to Laguna de Apoyo, Masaya and the Mombacho cloud forest.
Lakes and volcanoes
Ometepe, two volcanoes rising from Lake Nicaragua, is the place for farm-based eco-lodges, hiking and kayaking. Laguna de Apoyo is a swimmable crater lake with a handful of lodges on its rim, and the cool coffee highlands around Matagalpa offer a mountain alternative.
Pacific and Caribbean coasts
San Juan del Sur, Popoyo and the Tola coast draw surfers and sunset seekers, with design-led hotels above the beaches. On the Caribbean side, the Corn Islands are reached by a short flight from Managua and have a slow, Creole-English island feel.
When to go
The dry season from December to April is the most comfortable, though the Pacific coast has good surf from May to November. Managua is a gateway rather than a destination.
