From £162/ night
A small, ornate hotel in a restored 19th-century house, with antique furnishings and three rooms on each floor.
Stone Town is the old Swahili trading port of Zanzibar, a UNESCO-listed tangle of coral-stone houses, carved teak doors and narrow lanes that open onto the waterfront. Its best small hotels occupy 19th-century merchant mansions, with courtyards, four-poster beds and rooftop restaurants for sunset over the dhows.
Most boutique hotels sit in the heart of the old town, near the Forodhani Gardens and the harbor. You can walk to markets, spice shops and the old fort, but expect some noise from the call to prayer and street life. Rooftop terraces are the main reason to choose one house over another.
Stone Town is hot and humid for much of the year. Many travelers spend two nights here and then move on to the beaches in the north or east. Book ahead for July to September and the Christmas period.
