Nungwi (Zanzibar)
A smaller, quieter boutique property a short walk from the beach.
Nungwi lies at the northwest tip of Zanzibar, a former dhow-building village that is now the island's liveliest beach area. Its main attraction is a long white beach that stays deep enough for swimming through the tides, backed by palms, small hotels and beach bars.
The smaller boutique-style properties sit a short walk from the sand and are quieter than the big resorts that dominate the headland. Sunset is the main daily event, best watched from the western beaches.
The beach front can be busy with vendors and boat touts. If you want quiet, choose a hotel on a less developed stretch or head east to Matemwe or Paje. Nungwi is about an hour and a half by road from Stone Town.
