Arusha is the starting point for most northern-circuit safaris, a busy city at the foot of Mount Meru. Around it, coffee farms and forest gardens hold a few of the country's most restful small hotels, ideal for the first night after a long flight or the last before leaving.

The best choices lie slightly outside the center, in gardens near the airport road or on the slopes of Mount Meru. Several are built as clusters of cottages, with verandas and fireplaces.
