Luxor stands on the site of ancient Thebes, with the great temples of Karnak and Luxor on the east bank and the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple on the west. The pace is slower than in Cairo, and mornings begin early to beat the heat.
The east bank has the corniche and the historic grand hotel, while the west bank is quieter, with farmland, village lanes and small guesthouses among sugarcane and date palms. Many small hotels have rooftop terraces with views of the river and the temples.
Temple visits are best at opening time or late in the afternoon. From May to September, temperatures can pass 40 degrees Celsius, and the cooler months from November to March are the most comfortable.
