Marrakech
A walled medina of private multistory riads, each with its own plunge pool, built by Morocco's finest craftsmen.
Marrakech is Morocco's most theatrical city, with the snake charmers and food stalls of Jemaa el-Fna, the souks of the medina and the gardens of the Majorelle and the Agdal. Its riads are the reason many people come: behind a plain wall, a courtyard with orange trees, a plunge pool and a rooftop terrace with views of the Atlas.
The medina puts you in the middle of everything, and the quieter Kasbah quarter near the Saadian Tombs is a good compromise. For space and gardens, look at the Palmeraie and the estates on the road to the Atlas.
Most medina riads can't be reached by car; staff will meet you with a handcart. October to May is the best time to visit; summer afternoons regularly exceed 100°F.
