Gibb's Farm

Ngorongoro

A coffee farm lodge near Karatu with 17 cottages in gardens, in a farmhouse dating from 1929.

Ngorongoro is the collapsed crater of an ancient volcano, and its floor, about 600 meters below the rim, is home to lions, rhinos, hippos and large herds of grazing animals. Staying on the rim means misty mornings above the cloud forest and a short descent for game drives.

Where to stay

A few lodges and camps stand on the rim itself, some with suites styled after Maasai homesteads and others in luxury tents. The farmland around Karatu offers a quieter alternative, with gardens and cottages about an hour from the crater.

Good to know

The rim is high and cool, with chilly nights and frequent mist, so pack warm clothes. Crater descents are limited by the conservation authority, so book your drive through the lodge well in advance.
