Fes
A 17th-century palace with a large orange-tree courtyard, a hammam and individually designed rooms.
Founded in the ninth century, Fes is Morocco's spiritual and cultural heart. Its old city, Fes el-Bali, is a UNESCO-listed labyrinth of more than 9,000 lanes, home to the Qarawiyyin mosque and university, the leather tanneries and the carved cedar and tilework of the Bou Inania and Attarine madrasas.
The best hotels are restored merchants' palaces inside the medina, many with courtyards of zellige tiles and rooftop terraces overlooking a sea of minarets. Places near Bab Boujloud or the Batha area are easiest to reach by taxi.
A local guide for your first day in the medina makes navigation far easier. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons; summers are hot.
