Serengeti
Six richly furnished tents in the private Grumeti reserve, styled after a 1920s expedition camp.
The Serengeti is Tanzania's best-known wilderness, a vast plain of grassland and kopjes that holds lions, cheetahs and one of the great migrations of large animals on earth. The most rewarding places to stay are small camps, many with fewer than a dozen tents, that move with the seasons or sit in private concessions.
The central Seronera area has year-round game, while the north is the place for the Mara River crossings between July and October. Private concessions in the west and the Grumeti area allow walks, night drives and off-road driving that the national park does not.
Mobile camps follow the herds and are dismantled for part of the year, so check where a camp stands in your travel month. Distances are large, and most guests fly between airstrips.
