Valladolid
A small hotel close to the main square, praised for its breakfast and location.
Valladolid is a small colonial town in the eastern Yucatán, with a leafy main square, a Franciscan convent and streets of brightly painted houses. It makes a peaceful base for the great Mayan city of Chichén Itzá, the lesser-visited ruins of Ek Balam and some of the peninsula's most spectacular cenotes, including Zací right in town.
The area between the main square and the Calzada de los Frailes, a pretty street leading to the San Bernardino convent, has the most characterful small hotels and restaurants.
Arrive at Chichén Itzá when it opens to avoid the heat and the crowds. The town is about two hours from Cancún and Mérida. The cooler months from November to February are the most comfortable.
