Suchitoto
A renovated 18th-century colonial boutique hotel run by a French-Salvadoran couple in the historic center.
Suchitoto is El Salvador's best-preserved colonial town, a grid of cobbled streets, tile-roofed houses and a white church on a hill above Lake Suchitlán. It is an arts town, with galleries, a lively festival calendar and restaurants serving riverside fish and local pupusas. The surrounding area has waterfalls, indigo workshops and lake boat trips.
The best places are restored colonial houses in the historic center. One is a renovated 18th-century hotel run by a French-Salvadoran couple, praised by Lonely Planet as one of the best places to stay in the country. Another occupies an old house declared a national cultural heritage site, with views from its terrace. A few smaller B&Bs add value.
Suchitoto is about an hour and a half north of San Salvador, so it works as a day trip or a one- to two-night stay. Weekends fill with visitors from the capital and midweek is quiet. Evenings are cooler than on the coast. Check current official travel advice before traveling.
