Holbox
A calm, art-filled beachfront hotel with a well-regarded restaurant.
Holbox is a long, narrow island at the edge of the Yum Balam nature reserve, where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Caribbean. There are no cars, only golf carts and bicycles on sandy roads, and its shallow, calm waters attract flamingos, pelicans and, from June to September, whale sharks.
Most small hotels line the beach on either side of the village, which is the best place to be for restaurants and sunset bars. Hotels to the east, toward Punta Cocos and Punta Mosquito, are quieter.
Holbox is reached by ferry from Chiquilá, about two and a half hours by road from Cancún. Cash is useful, as ATMs can run dry. The bioluminescence on moonless summer nights is unforgettable.
