The Valle de Guadalupe in Baja California, about an hour and a half south of the US border, produces most of Mexico's wine. Its dry hills and boulder-strewn valleys have become one of the most exciting food and wine destinations in Latin America, with outdoor restaurants cooking over open flames and wineries built from rusted steel, concrete and recycled materials.
Most hotels are spread among the vineyards along the valley's dirt roads. Ensenada and the Pacific coast are thirty minutes away, and a few hotels are close to the coast.
The harvest festival, the Fiestas de la Vendimia, takes place in August. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons, as summers are very hot and dusty. A designated driver or private driver is wise for tastings.
