Oaxaca

Oaxaca is a colonial city in a high valley of southern Mexico, and for many travelers it is the cultural heart of the country. Green-stone churches and pastel houses line its grid of streets, and its markets, mezcal bars and restaurants serve some of Mexico's most celebrated food. Zapotec ruins at Monte Albán and Mitla and craft villages known for weaving, pottery and alebrijes are an easy day out.
The historic center around the Zócalo and the pedestrian street that leads to Santo Domingo is the best base. Many small hotels are former family homes with courtyards and roof terraces looking over the domes.
The dry season from October to April is pleasant, and the Day of the Dead at the start of November and the Guelaguetza festival in July are the busiest times. Book well ahead for both.
