Where to stay in Quebec City

Quebec City was founded by the French in 1608, and its old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is still enclosed by stone ramparts. Narrow streets of steep-roofed houses wind between the upper town, crowned by the Château Frontenac, and the lower town by the river. The city has a strong French character, with bistros, cafés and a festive winter carnival.

Where to stay

The old town is the place to be, either in the lower town around Place Royale and the Old Port or in the upper town inside the walls. Saint-Roch, just outside, has the city's most interesting new restaurants.

Good to know

Summer and early autumn are lovely, and the Winter Carnival in February is a highlight for those who don't mind the cold. Montmorency Falls and the Île d'Orléans are a short drive away.
