San Miguel de Allende is a colonial hill town in the Bajío, Mexico's central highlands, listed by UNESCO for its well-preserved historic center. Its cobbled lanes, ochre and terracotta houses and the pink spires of the Parroquia make it one of the most photogenic towns in the country, and a long-established community of artists and writers gives it a cosmopolitan feel.
The historic center around the Jardín is walkable and full of galleries, rooftop bars and restaurants. Hotels on the slopes above town have the best views but involve steep walks.
The weather is pleasant all year, with warm days and cool nights. The festivals, especially around Easter, the Day of the Dead and the September patron saint celebrations, are spectacular and busy. Comfortable shoes are essential on the cobblestones.
