Mérida

Mérida, the capital of the Yucatán, is a city of pastel colonial houses, shady plazas and grand 19th-century mansions built on the wealth of the henequen trade. It has a lively cultural life, with free music and dance in its squares most evenings, and it is an excellent base for Mayan ruins, cenotes and restored haciendas.
The historic center has the most hotels, many in restored houses with courtyard pools. Paseo de Montejo, a boulevard of grand mansions, is slightly quieter. Hacienda hotels outside the city offer more space and countryside.
Mérida is hot all year and very hot from April to June, so a pool makes a real difference. The cooler months from November to February are the most comfortable. Uxmal and the Ruta Puuc are under two hours away.
