Bacalar is a small town in southern Quintana Roo on the shore of a long freshwater lagoon whose water shifts from turquoise to deep indigo. The lagoon is fed by cenotes and underground rivers and is home to stromatolites, some of the oldest life forms on Earth. Kayaking, paddleboarding and boat trips to the Pirates' Channel are the main pastimes.
Most small hotels sit on the lagoon shore, with their own docks for swimming. The town has a pretty 18th-century fort and a handful of restaurants within walking distance.
The dry season from November to April is the best time to visit. Sunscreen and motorboats are restricted to protect the lagoon. Bacalar is about four hours south of Tulum by road.
