Puebla is one of Mexico's great colonial cities, with a UNESCO-listed historic center of more than two thousand buildings decorated with Talavera tiles, carved stone and gilded altars. It is the home of mole poblano and chiles en nogada, and its markets and sweet shops are a joy to explore. The nearby town of Cholula has the largest pyramid in the world by volume, crowned by a church.
The historic center around the Zócalo is the best base. The Barrio de los Sapos, with its antique shops and cafés, and the Talavera workshops are within walking distance.
Puebla is two hours from Mexico City by road. The weather is mild most of the year. Chiles en nogada are in season from July to September.
