Isla Mujeres is a small island across the bay from Cancún, but it feels a world away. Its colorful town has a laid-back, fishing-village atmosphere, and Playa Norte at its northern tip has calm, shallow water perfect for swimming. Snorkeling on the reefs, the underwater sculpture museum and swimming with whale sharks in summer are the highlights.
The north end near Playa Norte and the town is the most convenient. The quieter eastern and southern coasts are rockier and wilder, with a few secluded small hotels.
Ferries leave frequently from Cancún and take about twenty minutes. Golf carts are the usual way to get around. The best weather is from November to April.
