Utila · 12 rooms
A small, locally run waterfront hotel in a wooden building, with 12 spotless rooms.
Utila is the smallest and most relaxed of the three main Bay Islands, a low, mangrove-fringed island where bicycles and golf carts are the usual transport. Its reputation rests on cheap, excellent diving and the chance to snorkel or dive with whale sharks, which are seen year-round.
Most accommodation is simple, built for divers, but a few places stand out. Waterfront hotels on stilts have kitchenettes and wraparound balconies, and one small adults-only hotel near Chepes Beach has an infinity pool and air-conditioned rooms. Stays are close to the main street and the dock.
The ferry from La Ceiba takes about an hour, and there are small flights from the mainland. Utila's beaches are modest, so you come here for the water. Sand flies can bite at dusk, so pack repellent. Dive courses are among the cheapest in the world.
