04
Roatán
A small boutique hotel in West End, close to the dive shops and restaurants.
Roatán is the largest of the Bay Islands, a long ridge of green hills with a barrier reef just offshore. West Bay Beach has the island's finest sand and most of its polished hotels, West End is a casual dive-town strip, and the east and north shore have quieter coves and a few secluded lodges.
The boutique choice is mostly small beachfront hotels and villa-style stays, many with their own dock or pier. West Bay is the easiest base for swimming and snorkeling, while the northern coast around Sandy Bay offers B&Bs and cabins close to the dive centers. Private-cay stays are reached by boat.
Diving and snorkeling are the main activities, with the reef starting a few minutes from shore. The dry season from February to May is the most settled, and flights arrive from several US hubs. Ask hotels about airport transfers, as the island is long and taxis are costly.
