Guanajuato grew rich on silver in the 18th century, and its wealth built grand churches, theaters and mansions crammed into a narrow valley. Houses painted in every color climb the hillsides, roads run through tunnels beneath the town, and its tiny plazas and alleys, such as the Callejón del Beso, are best explored on foot. It is also a lively university town and the birthplace of Diego Rivera.
The historic center is compact and walkable. Hotels on the hillsides have splendid views but steep access, and a few small hotels sit in the quieter Marfil area just outside town.
The Festival Internacional Cervantino in October is the cultural highlight of the year and fills the town. The weather is mild all year. San Miguel de Allende is about an hour and a half away.
