The Maasai Mara National Reserve and the private conservancies that surround it form one of the richest wildlife areas on Earth. From July to October, more than a million wildebeest and zebras arrive from the Serengeti and cross the Mara River, but the resident lions, leopards, cheetahs and elephants make it rewarding all year.
Camps in the conservancies – Olare Motorogi, Naboisho, Mara North – limit the number of vehicles and allow walking and night drives. Inside the reserve, camps along the rivers put you close to the crossings.
Daily flights from Nairobi's Wilson Airport take about an hour. Hot-air balloon flights at dawn are a highlight. Book migration season well ahead.
