Nyerere (Selous)
A tented camp beside Lake Siwandu, in the best game-viewing area of the park.
Nyerere National Park, formerly the northern part of the Selous Game Reserve, is a vast wilderness of lakes, channels and miombo woodland along the Rufiji River. Boat safaris and walking are as important here as game drives, and you can see hippos, crocodiles and elephants from the water.
Around a dozen small camps sit in and around the park, and the eastern area near lakes Manze and Siwandu is considered the best for game viewing. Most are tented and located beside the river or a lake.
The southern parks are reached by light aircraft from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar. The dry season, between June and October, is best, and many camps close in the heaviest rains.
