Meknes
A traditional riad in a quiet part of the medina, praised for its decor and service.
Meknes was the 17th-century capital of Moulay Ismail, who built miles of walls, palaces and stables for 12,000 horses. Its monumental Bab Mansour gate faces the lively Place el-Hedim, and the medina is relaxed and easy to explore. The Roman ruins of Volubilis and the holy town of Moulay Idriss are a short drive away, as are the vineyards of the Guerrouane region.
The boutique choice is limited to a few traditional riads in the medina; many travelers visit on a day trip from Fes.
Meknes is about 40 minutes by train from Fes. Spring is the best season for combining the city with Volubilis.
