Where to stay in Merzouga (Erg Chebbi)

Erg Chebbi is Morocco's classic Sahara landscape: a sea of sand dunes about 14 miles long on the edge of the hamada near the Algerian border. Travelers come for camel treks at sunset, nights in desert camps, drumming around the fire and sunrise over the dunes. The village of Merzouga and the nearby towns of Rissani and Erfoud are the gateways.

Where to stay

Most visitors spend a night in a tented camp among the dunes, reached by camel or 4x4, and another in a kasbah-style hotel at the edge of the sand.

Good to know

Merzouga is a long drive from Marrakech (about nine hours), so most trips stop in the Dades or Todra gorges on the way. Spring and autumn are best; summer days are fiercely hot.
