From €200/ night
A former governor's kasbah above Imlil, run with the local community and facing the Toubkal massif.
Ninety minutes from Marrakech, Imlil sits at about 5,700 feet in a valley of terraced fields, walnut and cherry orchards and earth-built villages. It is the base for climbing Jebel Toubkal (13,671 feet), but most visitors come for easier day walks between villages, mule treks and cooking with local families.
Lodges here are built in the local style from stone and earth, many run with the involvement of the surrounding Berber communities. Expect terraces with mountain views rather than big-hotel amenities.
Spring brings blossom and green fields, and autumn is clear and mild. Winter brings snow to the peaks and cold nights; some trails need a guide.
