Tangier
From €450/ night
Yves Saint Laurent's former home, now a garden hotel with a pool and views across the Strait.
For much of the 20th century, Tangier was an international zone that drew writers and artists from Paul Bowles to the Beat Generation. Today the city has been polished up, with a new marina and promenade, but the kasbah, the medina and the old cafés such as Café Hafa still carry its bohemian spirit. Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules lie just to the west.
The kasbah has the most atmospheric small hotels, with terraces looking over the strait to Spain. On the Old Mountain, a few villas have gardens and pools.
High-speed trains link Tangier to Rabat and Casablanca in a few hours, and ferries cross to Tarifa in about an hour. Summers are warm and breezy.
