Essaouira
Four connected 18th-century houses near the ramparts, among the first boutique hotels in Morocco.
Essaouira's 18th-century medina, laid out by a French architect for a Moroccan sultan, sits on a windswept peninsula ringed by sea walls. It is calmer than Marrakech, with a working fishing port, thuya-wood workshops, galleries and a long beach favored by kitesurfers. The annual Gnaoua World Music Festival fills the town in June.
Inside the walls, small riads offer rooftop terraces over the ocean. In the countryside around the town, a handful of country estates and guesthouses have gardens and pools, sheltered from the wind.
The trade winds blow hardest from spring to late summer, keeping temperatures mild even in July. It is about three hours by road from Marrakech.
