Chefchaouen
A riad in the medina with an indoor pool, a hammam and a rooftop facing the blue town and the Rif.
Chefchaouen was founded in 1471 as a mountain fortress and for centuries was closed to outsiders. Today its blue-washed lanes, the red-walled kasbah on the main square and the view from the Spanish Mosque at sunset make it one of Morocco's most photographed towns. The surrounding Rif Mountains offer walks to waterfalls and Akchour's river gorge.
Small riads and guesthouses fill the medina; a few on the hillside above have gardens and pools with views over the town.
Chefchaouen is about two hours from Tetouan and four from Fes. Early mornings, before day-trippers arrive, are the best time to explore. Winters can be cold and wet.
