Napa Valley · 5 rooms
A tiny, very private inn high on the eastern hills of the Stags Leap District with wide views across the valley.
Napa Valley is a narrow, thirty-mile valley north of San Francisco, lined with hundreds of wineries from the town of Napa up to Calistoga. Its small hotels range from hillside retreats above the vines to design hotels in the village of Yountville, which has an outsized share of the valley's top restaurants.
Yountville is the most walkable base, with restaurants and tasting rooms on its main street. St. Helena and Rutherford are surrounded by famous estates, while Calistoga at the northern end is known for its hot springs and mud baths.
Harvest season, from August to October, is the most atmospheric and the busiest. Many wineries require reservations for tastings, so plan ahead. Winter is quieter and cheaper, with green hills and mustard flowers between the vines.
