03
Gracias
A boutique colonial inn with a courtyard pool and Jacuzzi, the closest thing to a resort in town.
Gracias was an early Spanish capital of Central America and still has cobbled streets, adobe houses and a restored fort on the hill. It is the gateway to Celaque National Park, whose cloud forest holds Honduras's highest peak, and to hot springs a short drive away. Lenca villages with pottery and weaving lie in the surrounding hills.
The top choice is a colonial inn with a courtyard pool, recently renovated and a short walk from the plaza. Other small hotels are family-run, with spotless rooms and good restaurants. In the Lenca villages nearby, simple guesthouses offer a way to meet the community.
Gracias is a long drive from San Pedro Sula, about three and a half hours, so most visitors stay two nights. The cooler highland air is a relief after the lowlands, and mornings in the cloud forest are best for hiking.
